How to Operate an Urban Forestry Business

Wood Mizer, an international company, manufacturing small sawmills and log and wood processing equipment, for the Urban Forestry, small sawmill operations, and re manufacturing industries.

I have been hired to present at many great seminars for Wood Mizer, and met many wonderful people either experienced in or entering into the business or pleasure part of milling wood from logs or pre used materials.

In this seminar the topic was our success in recycling urban trees into usable materials.

Included are two photos. One of me inside a retreat we created for a client, and another of me presenting at a Wood Mizer seminar in San Bernardino.

Thinking Sustainable Design

I will be the guest speaker at the Tri-State Urban and Community Wood Collaborative conference this month. There will also be a roundtable discusssion regarding the use of urban wood waste. My presentation will include ways to help our communities become more sustainable. The theme of this conference is “Urban and Community Wood: Developing a Brand.” It will be held just outside of Chicago at the Morton Arboretum on May 24, 2010. The topics discussed at the conference will include:

1. The need for a definition of what “urban and community wood” means (including a clear description of allowed wood sourcing and included products).

2. A branding and marketing strategy for urban and community wood

3. Develop our own certification plan and strategy, while also cultivating functional working relationships with existing forest product certifiers.

4. The possibility for a national conference on urban wood utilization

There will be a second Roundtable to explore opportunities for the use of urban wood products in today’s marketplace and how we can best position these products to capitalize on existing markets. We will begin by developing a definition of community and urban wood and then reviewing options for branding urban and community wood and products. We plan to detail actions that will allow us to achieve our goals.

How to manage Natural Resources and urban forests.

Because of my extensive experience in the retail lumber industry I have had many opportunities to offer my expertise and skill.

This year I am a guest lecturer at Cal Poly leading a class in wood properties, marketing and utility of wood as it comes out of the log form.

This has been the fourth year that I have done this work for Cal Poly and it has lead to many opportunities to interface with the wood science industry taught at Cal Poly’s Forestry and Natural Resource Managment school.

Learning about Wood utility and marketing

Working with Cal Poly Students who are learning wood properties elements. We are studying the production and the marketing aspects of urban wood in this photo.

These students are operating a Lucas Mill, and producing parts of a utility shed to be constructed on site on the Cal Polys’ Swanton Pacific Ranch, an “outdoor” classroom rich in timber resources, located in Davenport California.

Pacific Coast Lumber leads in the new sustainable industries of “Green building” and Urban Forestry, as well as recycling of green solid wastes.
